Anyone who compares Douanier Rousseau with Susan Boyle is ok in my book, and that’s what Will Gompertz does in his brilliant book “What are you looking at” I’d recommend this book to anyone, he writes simply and amusingly about modern art and its beginnings and makes sense of it all. There’s no ‘art bollocks’ here so far. I managed to pick up my copy in the Oxfam bookshop in Cheltenham not long after the literary festival we have here each year. First flowers on my tomatoes have more hair on them than on the top of my head. Perhaps I should take to drinking “Miracle Grow”, but then it might affect the hair I have elsewhere like on my chin which grows faster than my cucumbers, which appear from seemingly nowhere to surround me. I call this Robin’s drawing, as it’s from a fine photo from my good friend Robin. Black and white ink drawing done some time ago now, certainly pre lockdown. I’m not sure exactly where it is but somewhere on the Cotswolds. There’s grey pastel added and one attempt at the sky was done again and the drawing glued together again. Cut out the old sky with a scalpel and transplanted the new one, with the help of today’s version of cow gum. So you should be able to see the join. Wandering around an antique type of warehouse in some old industrial buildings today in Elsecar, it’s in the Heritage Centre and look at what I found. I bought none of these, after all what am I going to do with cuckoo snuff. Like the bird it’s an endangered species if not extinct these days, but there is a tin of it in South Yorkshire.
