The Pork Pie Diet

I was a big lad as friendly northern people who knew me described me, but looking back at early photos not as big as I thought I was. Less than friendly people called me entirely different names, which I laughed off but it hurt. Settling in London after my college years, I persuaded myself that I should lose some weight. The incentive was a woman who bet me I couldn’t. ( Woman? Girl? Which is it, we were in our early 20s and ‘girl’ sounds too young and woman too old, she wasn’t a lady! ) She worked in the … Continue reading The Pork Pie Diet

“Who buys this stuff?”

Insurance? It’s a mystery tour to me. Seems like they get their prices by throwing a few number blocks in the air and then settling on the red ones. Some companies, like plumbers, give you such an astronomical price that you wonder if they do it to make sure you won’t buy.. Of course, as one gets older, the more expensive it gets. I’m talking about travel insurance here, but it can apply to driving too. While with driving, the risks do get higher as our faculties and reactions slow down to the same speed we now drive. Younger drivers … Continue reading “Who buys this stuff?”

What to feed a poorly Viking:

It’s the Anniversary of ‘Custardgate’ It’s a year since I was an honoured guest of our NHS. I remember it like yesterday. I went in with the aid of a zimmer frame walking aid and walked steadily out of there ten days later without it. Better than some but not as well as others. The drugs worked. The memory lingers on, and it’s not generally a gloomy one. To get the nitty gritty out of the way I have a condition called polymyalgia. Not very pleasant, and I was a guest there to eliminate any other potential ‘nasties’. I’m a … Continue reading What to feed a poorly Viking:

Bloggomania and cow gum.

I’m moved to draw the above by postings by this chap which are well written and entertaining, worth a look. Jon Beckett I’ve been busy re-discovering fun of glueing. It may be worth recounting here exactly how I do my drawings. They are drawn straight onto layout paper which is kind of paper that will allow you to see the page below, not tracing paper but similar but a lot more opaque. So quick first rough is done on this and then the second done over the first and so on until I get to the final drawing. So it’s done … Continue reading Bloggomania and cow gum.

Ooooops!

Health and safety, there it is in a nutshell. There’s nothing really very funny about slipping with a hot cup tea but somehow a cartoon makes it seem ‘different’. A little like the violence on Tom and Jerry, it’s not quite the same. I’ve done a lot of cartoons on ‘health and safety’ over the years and this one dates back quite a few years, so many that I forget who the client was.Probably a building company that used to commission cartoons about safety for them. I hope that they had some effect or someone’s slipped up. Continue reading Ooooops!
