Gnomes are where the heart is?

There I was rifling through some old files and looking at some back up work from eons ago and what should pop up, but this. It was commissioned, I’m not sure by who now but looks like electrical goods to me. I recycled a joke used in an even earlier drawing, which is the film that Rudolf is watching just before Christmas. It’s ” A Mince Pie to Far”, any suggestions for starring roles will be appreciated. What’s different about this is it is pre digital and all done in magic marker and chalks which is the odd mix of … Continue reading Gnomes are where the heart is?

Impossible game

I’ve only played golf once and then with my brother. It was in Bolton, yes Bolton in the industrial north and many years ago when we were “nobbut lads” as they say up there “int north”. We both found it impossible and I have to say that it is a game where I would rather watch paint dry than watch them play these days, but then like tax inspectors I suppose someone has to do it. Or do they… really? This is from a series on sports that I am working on intermittently. It’s not quite finished yet. I will … Continue reading Impossible game

Where’s the joke?

I got into this by accident. I always wanted to be an advertising art director as it sounded glamorous and there might be lots of travel. Photo shoots in glamorous places with glamorous people go with. I had a brief period in the business before I got the order of the golden boot, not fired, just not wanted.I never went anywhere glamorous, but met some lovely people. The agency that I then worked for: S.H. Bensons was one of those grand old men of advertising where famous novelists started as copywriters and Mr Benson himself was famous for being the original ‘marketing … Continue reading Where’s the joke?

What’s the betting you don’t win?

Cheltenham Race Week starts tomorrow, I think. I live down the road from the course but I’ve never been there. I’m sure it’s a wonderful event and the town will be filled with a heady mix of racegoers looking for the full English Breakfast or even the full Irish, as many of them are from Ireland. The bookies have a heyday and the streets start to fill with young women dressed as jockeys in a rather unseemly attempt at attracting business. Some of them have obviously never been near a horse and the horse would probably be thankful for that. … Continue reading What’s the betting you don’t win?

Give us a rung…

Another resurrected piece, this one was also used for site safety message for the building trade. I’ll use it again, and again. This version a rough that I intend to finish sometime. When one sees the figures for accidents with ladders they are quite phenomenal, but then one only has to look on an average weekend at the DIY superstars who seem to think they are superman, balancing on the top of a rickety old ladder with granny holding the bottom of the ladder for safety, when the likely result is that they will fall on top of her. I’m … Continue reading Give us a rung…

Look out for forking lifters.

Listening tonight to the radio I heard someone saying that Monet spent ten years working on some of his paintings, well this idea is at least ten years old and was intended for a campaign on safety at work. I’ve resurrected it as it was a good idea then, and a good idea now. If it’s good enough for Monet then it’s good enough for me. There was a time not that long ago when I worked at a factory where a young lady used to drive the fork lift. She was a bit of an expert but as mad … Continue reading Look out for forking lifters.

Building blokes…

It’s expected of men to be able to use a power tool as if they have a degree in advanced woodworking when the only skills you might have are being able to draw a relatively straight line. I’ve put up shelves, and the effort and result nearly gave me a nervous breakdown. I always claimed to my wife, who said they were not straight, that they were ‘visually straight’, which means they were n’t straight. I’ve even been known to try my hand at bricklaying though it was only in the garden. It was something that I found extremely satisfying … Continue reading Building blokes…

Dropping the catch, or not?

I hope that everyone out there has a very peaceful and Happy New Year. I’m working on a series (yet again) of drawings that are loosely described as ” Sports Nuts”. Here’s one of the rough versions done between mince pies and acres of pork at Christmas spent with the family up in what’s normally the frozen north but was this time, very mild but very wet and windy. I got up earlier than most and found it a perfect time to scribble away before the usual late breakfast and the other culinary challenges of the day. I’m not a … Continue reading Dropping the catch, or not?

The Happy Hiker

I’m working on a load of stuff in my old drawers, no panto sniggers please.A series of drawings that I did some years ago that I always meant to finish up. At last I’m doing it and this one just about summed up the latter part of the year for me.This is not quite finished and is at present just the line work, but is really all there. I’m keen on hiking and walking and this year was a gem for that, with walking in the Orkneys and in the Rockies as the highlights, plus some gems in the Mendips … Continue reading The Happy Hiker

Supermarket stare, it’s that time of year again. Are you going to let it happen again? Probably.

Worth re-blogging this from the last build-up to the X word. You’ll be seeing a few of these around from about this weekend on. Have pity. It only take one trip to a Supermarket for the viewer to notice: ‘Man who’s been let loose in a supermarket with a list’. ‘Don’t come home without those items on the list that we never buy at any other time of the year’ is the order ringing around the head. Sending them on days like these is a cruelty beyond reason. They are not used to supermarkets at the best of times rarely getting … Continue reading Supermarket stare, it’s that time of year again. Garage bloke and a stopped cheque.

A mix of photos and drawing today. I came across this drawing in the recent cull and it originally would have had a punchline on it somewhere, but that’s disappeared. …and the photos are taken from a couple of years ago at a garage on the A38, so that’s not too specific as it runs down the entire country. The garage bloke was one of those ‘men who mends cars’, rather than a techie computer whizz, the photographs behind him are all his family photos that he has pinned to his wall for the past 30 years or so. He … Continue reading Garage bloke and a stopped cheque.
