Here’s what became of some of them, from this drawing by Anthony ‘Doove’ Woolaston, who’s subsequent life and career remains something of a mystery. He was certainly talented and managed to capture most of us with uncanny accuracy. I am my usual smiling self in the front row. Also in the show are some of out fellow fine artists, like Bob Nancolis, Bob Frith, and Graham Wells, who don’t feature in this drawing as they avoided graphic design.

There are one or two names that I cannot recollect from the drawing, and staff and tchnicians are marked by just a red dot at present but amongst them are typographer/designer Cal Swann, children’s book illustrator Tony Ross, Nigel Baron, “Tub” Williams, Mr Schofield, Mr Lofthouse who was the head of the whole graphic design school.

  1. Hey we were also students at Manchester Art college 1969.
Stan Codling and sitting next to him Carolyn Richardson,.
We also have a copy of this Tony Woolaston drawing..

    1. I remember you of course. You and Manchesters answer to Mick Jagger but who spoke like the singing postman. I recall Stan actually commissioned me to do a drawing for the post office many years ago when he was an art director I think at Dorlands. Might be wrong. I hope this finds you both well. Sadly Tony died not very long ago after he got Motor Neurone disease. I did manage to speak to him and he was generally very positive even with such a cruel disease. Where are you these days? My best wishes to both of you.

      1. Sad to hear about Doove, what a shame. I met him at Leicester on Pre-dip year.
Stan and I are doing ok and living in Sidcup. We have 3 children and 9 grandchildren, many of whom live nearby, so I can’t see us retiring to Cumbria, which had been in the plan !
We still see Garnet Edwards and John Batty. They were the year above us, maybe you remember them. Most other names have vanished.
We had a tour of the Cartoon museum in London yesterday and it made me think about Tony. That’s when I saw your post of the 1969 cartoon.
Are you based in London? hopefully enjoying retirement now..

      2. Yes Carolyn, remember both of those names well. Garnet gave me some valuable advice in my early freelance days and I recall John being from Yorkshire, poor thing. So you saw my post at the Cartoon Museum! How did it get there? We have lived in Gloucestershire for many years and now in Cheltenham, I left London in about 1981. I had a long career in cartoons and then changed direction when I got to 58 and went to work for a local Gloucester Print Company as a salesman for 10 years, which was good for me. Married for over 50 years, two kids, one in Yorkshire 2 grandsons, the other in LA with the other two grandsons ( twins ) Still drawing, but not getting paid for it these days. If you come out west let me know and I’ll buy you a drink!
