House 24. Sunday School or Pub?

This fantastic building is on Southgate Street in Gloucester and is the former home of Robert Raikes, the man who founded the Sunday School ‘movement’. This picture was taken couple of years ago just after it had undergone a complete refurbishment after being bought by Samuel Smith’s Brewery. It’s worth reading more about it here

The owner of Samuel Smith’s Brewery is a bit of a tough character who does not approve of mobile phones or swearing. He closed down a pub where he heard swearing, but of course he’s never going to hear anything like that in Gloucester.

To be fair, he put millions into the restoration of this wonderful building and if you are ever in the area it’s worth popping in, but watch your language.
